We want a world that is free from Functional Neurological Disorder, it is very ambitious but we believe it is possible. We are determined, passionate and continue to work ferociously hard to understand this disorder in a better way so we can help patients. Life is very stressful and to deal with this disorder also can be life changing, we need more resources to continue the research into this condition.


About Us


The charity Functional Neurological Cure is founded by James Shaw, sadly at 18 he experienced a wide range of worrying symptoms while completing his exams in his last year at college. The symptoms were so intrusive and severe he had to withdraw from the college, luckily the college allowed James to get an average mark for his exams based on his previous work during the year. Overnight James developed a buzzing sensation across all his body, which worsened when anything came into contact with his skin. He also had an electric shock sensation across his body, meaning he had to sleep without any covers on during the night and had to wear light clothing due to the symptoms worsening when anything came into contact with his skin.


After numerous tests and referrals to a neurologist the GP thought it was anxiety causing the disorder. The symptoms went away after 3 months and completely resolved. Although affecting James’s mental health and being anxious he managed to start University. For 3 years he was in full health and managed to complete his course and get a degree in Business Studies. He made some great friends and felt his life was back on track, being optimistic about the future.



James went on to work in digital marketing and founded his own business. He had unusual symptoms such as burning in his feet while working. In which the GP prescribed Amitriptyline which is helpful for nerve pain. Sadly in October 2018 the symptoms which include a buzzing sensation across the body returned with a severe burning sensation in his feet that goes up both knees. The symptoms have remained and he also developed an overactive bladder and a functional stomach problem, which causes bloating and severe tightness in his abdomen. After seeing a neurologist again, he received the diagnosis of Functional Neurology Disorder. In January 2019 he received as much knowledge as possible and wanted to start this charity to hopefully end this terrible disorder.
